Scholarships:  The Garibaldi Museum offers six scholarships; one to a Tillamook Bay Community College student and five to seniors in Tillamook County schools, public or private.

For a Tillamook Bay Community College Student

The purpose of the scholarship is to raise interest in Captain Robert Gray and the Pacific Northwest Trade in the late 18th century.  Applications are available on line at www.GaribaldiMuseum.com/scholarship.htm.  Notice of award is made by May 15 to one Tillamook Bay Community College student for tuition, books or  fees at the Tillamook Bay Community College, whose Power Point presentation illustrates the best telling of the story of Captain Robert Gray and the trade in the Pacific Northwest. 

The requirements for the presentation include:

1)     A minimum of 8 minutes and not more than 12 minutes.

2)     Include title page, text, graphics, narrative and sound.

3)     The final page must include references used in the presentation.

4)     The narrative and text must be historically accurate and politically correct.  

5)     Slides are to include but are not limited to:

·   The purpose of the voyages

·        Gray's departure from Boston;

·    the long voyage at sea;

·    entrance into Tillamook Bay;

·    Lady Washington;

·    Columbia Rediviva

·    effects Gray's voyage had on American Indian Nations;

·    American fur-trade on the Pacific Rim;

·    Grays second voyage to discover the "Great River of the West"

·         The importance of Captain Robert Grays’ discovery of the Columbia River

Museum staff will make the museum available for group or private tours by appointment.  Pictures may be taken in the museum.

The memorial fund will award one $1,000 scholarship for tuition and or books and college fees at the Tillamook Bay Community College.  The Power Point Presentation must be emailed to info@garibaldimuseum.com by May 30.

 For Seniors in Tillamook County High Schools

The purpose of the scholarship is to raise interest in Captain Robert Gray and the Pacific Northwest Trade.  Applications are available in the Tillamook County, Oregon high schools. Notice of awards are made mid May to five seniors, from the Tillamook County, Oregon high schools whose essays illustrate the best understanding of any number of issues about Caption Robert Gray and the trade on the Pacific Rim. Essays should be a minimum of 500 words. Sources must be documented.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Gray's departure from Boston

  • The long voyage at sea

  • Entrance into Tillamook Bay

  • Lady Washington

  • Effects Gray's voyage had on American Indian nations

  • American fur trade on the Pacific Rim

  • Gray's second voyage to discover the Great Waterway of the West

 

Museum staff will make the museum available for group tours or private tours by appointment. 

The Memorial fund will award four $750 scholarships and one $1,000 scholarship.

Application and essay deadline is April 30. Application and essay must be        e-mailed to info@garibaldimuseum.com by April 30.
